Dr. Sharon Grant has been the owner and head veterinarian at Nelson Animal Hospital since October of 2006. She graduated from the DVM program at the University of Guelph in 2004 and also holds an honours B.Sc. in Wildlife Biology from the University of Guelph. Following graduation, Dr. Grant was employed full-time at a busy small animal and exotics practice here in Burlington. When the opportunity presented itself, she and her husband, Richard, made the jump into practice ownership.

Dr. Grant is a member of the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association, the College of Veterinarians of Ontario, and the Hamilton Academy of Veterinary Medicine. She attends conferences and lectures on a regular basis to keep updated with the most current developments in the field of veterinary medicine.

Dr. Grant’s practice philosophy involves maintaining the highest standard of veterinary medical care while honouring the human-animal bond and fostering communication in a warm and friendly environment. She deeply values the relationships formed with our client families and patients and absolutely loves caring for senior pets!

Dr. Grant resides in Oakville with her husband Richard (our practice manager), as well as their four children, Michael, Preston, Peyton, and Rowan. In addition to the permanent clinic residents and adoptable pets you will meet on our site, the Grant family includes a 12-year-old West Highland White Terrier named Isla, and a 2-year-old cat named Hannah.

Richard Grant has been the part-time practice manager at Nelson Animal Hospital since he and Dr. Grant purchased the hospital in 2006. He handles the business side of things so that everyone else can focus on the patients.

Richard is also a secondary school teacher at Milton District High School. In addition to raising their four children, his “spare” time is consumed with coaching high school football and soccer, as well as coaching the Burlington Youth Soccer League Boys U18 rep soccer team for the past 5 years.

An animal lover himself, Richard enjoys getting to know our patients and their families

Kelly & Ralph
Veterinary Assistant
kelly@nelsonanimalhospital.com

Kelly is a B.Sc. graduate from McMaster University. She began at Nelson Animal Hospital as our afternoon/evening receptionist 6 years ago, and is now a full-time veterinary assistant. She loves getting to know the patients and especially enjoys learning new things and assisting the veterinarians in their work. Over the years, Kelly has gained a great deal of valuable experience and is fascinated with the field of animal science; every day is a new adventure. Her love of animals extends into her personal life as well, being the lucky owner of two curious yet adorable little ferrets named Ralph and Dexter. She also enjoys being outdoors and doing creative craft activities in her spare time

Kaitlyn, Cricket, & Dixie
RVT

Kaitlyn graduated from Seneca College, King Campus in 2013. She started out here as a volunteer while working her summer job at a zoo. She always knew she had a huge love for helping animals and it was a life long goal to become a veterinary technician. She is very excited to be starting her career with our team here at Nelson Animal Hospital. Kaitlyn has a love for exotic animals and pocket pets. She has a 14 lb Flemish Giant rabbit named Dixie and a hamster named Cricket along with her family pets, 3 cats and a budgie. Outside of work you can find her enjoying the outdoors, shopping or spending time with her big bunny. She also likes to squeeze in some painting when she has rare free time.

Jade & Izzy
RVT

Jade graduated from the University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus vet tech program in 2012, and has been working in the veterinary field for many years. Jade's special interests as an RVT are animal behaviour and dental health. In her spare time she enjoys going on trail rides with her horse Justin and her two dogs Izzy, a bulldog/pug mix, and Keeper, a Bernese mountain dog. She also enjoys doing Rally obedience and agility with her dogs. When it comes to the outdoors, Jade is up for anything from back country camping to just a walk around the dog park. When she’s stuck inside she is just as content with cuddling up with her cat Checkers that she adopted from school. It may be a zoo around her house with all the little creatures, including two birds, but she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Dr. Nicole Visconti
